Ruben Burger, SA Team and Protea Weightlifter, had a vision – to create a world-class hybrid fitness facility – a first in South Africa at the time.
We worked closely with Ruben over a period of 6 months, discussing ideas over numerous training sessions and home-cooked meals, to conceptualise a facility that met his vision. The end result – an epic, multi-disciplinary training facility, equipped with world-class gym equipment, in the heart of the Garden Route.
Solution
The location for the facility is an old warehouse, with a combined in- and outdoor floor size of 700 sqm. Needless to say, floor space was not a concern, but the key, however, was to design a layout that would seamlessly integrate the eight, specialised training zones to create a structured customer experience.*
Each section is kitted out with top-of-the-range gym equipment, suited to the training discipline concerned, and includes:
– An Olympic Weightlifting area, host to numerous Weightlifting Championship competitions, featuring Eleiko and Gymway equipment and SMAI lifting platforms
– An outdoor Strongman zone, complete with a 35m train track, a viking press, 1 ton I-beam trolley, atlas stones, strongman logs, and much more.
– An affiliated CrossFit box, CrossFit Charisma, that features an 18m wall-mounted rig from AlphaState
– A Cardio zone, complete with the Precor cardio range
– A spinning studio

Concept 2 SkiErg
The Concept 2 SkiErg helps build strength and endurance using the poling motions integral to the sport of Nordic skiing, but you don’t need to be a skier to benefit from the terrific low impact and full-body exercise.
The double poling movement involves not just arms and shoulders, but also core and legs; classic ski technique (alternating arms) is also possible.The SkiErg easily accommodates adaptive athletes and those with lower body injuries, as one can sit or kneel and still get a great upper body and core workout. The SkiErg is suitable for use with most wheelchairs.
