A Large-Scale Gym with Community in Mind

The Gym in Worcester, Western Cape, is a 1000m² fitness facility serving over 1,500 members. As a community-driven gym, the project required a solution that balanced quality, durability, and affordability—without compromising on functionality.

Selecting Equipment for Maximum Value

Understanding that a high-volume commercial facility does not always require top-tier brand names at premium prices, we proposed a cost-effective yet durable range of equipment. Our team’s in-depth equipment knowledge ensured that the gym was fully equipped to handle heavy daily usage while keeping costs within budget.

For the cardio section, we recommended SportsArt’s entry-level range, including the T635A treadmills. While entry-level in pricing, these treadmills are designed for high-traffic use and come with a lifetime motor guarantee—a crucial factor in any commercial gym. Since the motor is the most critical and expensive component to replace, this guarantee significantly reduces long-term maintenance costs. SportsArt also provides some of the best warranties in the industry, ensuring peace of mind for gym owners. The cardio section also features SportsArt steppers, ellipticals, and recumbent bikes.

Additionally, we supplied air-based cardio machines, including Concept2 Rowers, Ski Ergs, and Bike Ergs, as well as Hurricane Airbikes and DraxFit Speed treadmills—popular choices for high-intensity and endurance training.

For strength training, we integrated a combination of BenchMark selectorised and plate-loaded machines, including linear leg press machines, cable crossovers and a Smith machine, along with a couple of Precor plate-loaded machines

The strength area includes an AlphaState free weight section, complete with benches, round PU dumbbell sets, and fixed barbells.

A 4-station, free-standing rig, kitted with rig attachments such as landmine sleeves, spotters arms, dip attachments and J-cups, balances versatility with space efficiency, creating a dedicated area for weightlifting enthusiasts. Adequate wall-mounted bumper plate and barbell storage ensures a seamless, uncluttered workout experience.

Dedicated class Areas

The layout is designed to enhance flow, accessibility, and safety, catering to high member traffic, with various dedicated areas providing the space and equipment for classes. The functional class area includes a wall-mounted rig, custom sled track, and rig storage units, keeping equipment like kettlebells, sand bags and wall balls easily accessible without cluttering the space.

Plyo boxes, gym rings and wall-mounted suspension trainers provide opportunity for additional calisthenics exercises. Large mirrors and windows and ample floor space makes this space ideal for group classes and dynamic workout sessions.

There is an additional functional training section in the open area for members and personal training clients to use throughout the day. Conveniently located close to the air-based cardio section, this area features a second wall-mounted rig and sled track, an Olympic lifting platform and weightlifting accessories.

Other dedicated class areas are located on the ground floor, and include a spinning studio, a yoga and pilates studio and Tone Zone circuit studio, complete with LifeFitness strength equipment and an AlphaState rig storage unit.

Seamless installation with minimal disruption

A major challenge was executing this installation while the gym remained fully operational. Our team worked systematically, removing old flooring and equipment in phases and installing new pieces and flooring during off-peak hours.

By working late nights and weekends, we minimised downtime and ensured a smooth transition for gym members.
